Adopurrs Needed

Save a Life

Adopting a pet saves a life and gives an abandoned animal a second chance. Each year, 2.7 million adoptable dogs and cats are euthanized in the U.S. due to overcrowded shelters and too few adopters. By choosing adoption, you reduce this number!

Change Their World

An adopted pet is just as loving, intelligent, and loyal as a purchased pet. Most animals are in shelters due to human issues not because of any fault of their own. While it takes time for pets to adjust, many are already house-trained.

Cost Effective

Fees for spay/neuter and vaccinations may be included with adoption. Plus, mixed-breed animals often live longer with fewer health issues than purebreds, reducing vet expenses. You may also save on housebreaking and training costs.

Your Wellbeing

Animals offer unconditional love and provide psychological, emotional, and physical benefits. Caring for a pet can provide a sense of purpose, fulfillment, and lessens feelings of loneliness. You can also feel proud about helping an animal in need!

Making Your Decision

Do you have other pets and how will they react to a new one?

What breed or species fits your lifestyle (e.g., exercise buddy, companion, clingy, independent)?

Would a younger or older pet be a better match for your lifestyle?

Is your home suitable for the pet (e.g., size, energy level, age) you’re considering?

How do your housemates feel about having a pet?

Are you or your household members intolerant of pet-related issues like hair, dirt, or allergies?

Do any health issues in your household affect pet care?

Is there tension at home that might affect the pet?

Has an adult agreed to be responsible for the pet’s care and training?

Do you want a pet that’s good with children or travels well?

How will your social life or work affect pet care?

Do you have a plan for your pet during vacations or travel?

Are you ready for initial costs, daily needs, and vet expenses?

It’s best to wait until you’ve selected your pet before shopping for supplies. Many supplies like food bowls and collars depend on the pet’s size. Remember to find out what food your pet was eating at the shelter or foster home to ease the transition.

Here’s a checklist of supplies you may need:

  • Hard plastic carrier/foldable metal crate
  • Collar
  • Four to six-foot leash
  • ID tag with your phone number
  • Food and water bowls
  • Food (canned and/or dry)

  1. Complete the Adoption Application either online or at the adoption center.
Applications are accepted on a first come, first served basis.
  2. Bring a valid photo ID and payment for the adoption fee (cash and major credit cards only).
  3. Meet with an Adoption Counselor to discuss your application and the pets you would like to meet.
  4. Visit with the pet(s) you are interested in during a Meet and Greet.
You and your family* will interact with pets and work with an Animal Care Associate to see if this is the right pet for you. The Brevard Humane Society does not “hold” pets for adopters, so if you want to finalize your adoption, please come prepared with all necessary household members for the Meet and Greet.

*Please note: For dog adoptions, the Brevard Humane Society requires that all household members meet and interact with the dog during a Meet and Greet before an adoption can be approved or finalized.

  5. If the Meet and Greet is a success, an Adoption Counselor will complete your adoption paperwork to make it official!
  6. Take your new family member home and begin your life together.
