Design a mask, bring it to either the Cocoa or Merritt Island Adoption centers, and compete for first place, official bragging rights AND a prize!
The deadline to enter the mask contest is Feb 5, 2020 at 5pm! We have an independent panel of judges that will be determining our champion!
THEN the fun continues…by bidding to WIN the masks created!
Online bidding will open on Monday Feb 10,2020 and close at 3PM on Friday Feb 14, 2020. The final bidding and auction will be held at our 14th Annual Mardi Gras Paws in the Park event on Feb 16, 2020. The auction winners will be announced at 2pm!

The Brevard Humane Society is pleased to partner with the American Space Museum & Space Walk of Fame on January 18, 2020 for a special adoption event in honor of the pioneering progress of manned missions through the past five decades.
January 2020 will mark 59 years since a young chimpanzee was launched into space on a suborbital flight that lasted a little over 16 minutes. HAM, the Astrochimp, as he would later become known, was named for the Holloman Aerospace Medical Center, the lab located on New Mexico’s Holloman Air Force Base that prepared him for his historic flight into space. Launched from Cape Canaveral, HAM would make aeronautic history aboard a NASA space capsule- and traveling almost 160 miles above the Earth to become the first chimp in space.
“On January 31, 1961, HAM became the first chimpanzee in space, and we are proud to honor HAM, his courage, and his sacrifice,” stated Theresa Clifton, Executive Director of the Brevard Humane Society. “HAM’s flight is remarkable for many reasons. He not only survived the flight, but performed his tasks despite the rigors of space flight and the fear he must have experienced. His courage and heroism ultimately paved the way for Alan Shepard, Jr., the first American in space.”
In addition to the adoption hosted by the Brevard Humane Society at 10 am, the anniversary celebration also looks to the future. Keynote speakers will seek to explore how animals might continue to shape the industry, and guests may enjoy a special “out of this world” pet photo session and stay for an exclusive showing of American Animal Astronaut Heroes at 6pm. Glitter, Glitz, and Glam- these are three words that can be associated with Mardi Gras. You also can’t forget the beads and King Cake! At the Brevard Humane Society, we enjoy celebrating the festivities as much as the next person, but what sets the Brevard Humane Society’s festivities apart is that we love to include some furry friendly “pet”-ticipants! In fact, this Mardi Gras celebration has become quite the masquerade! The Humane Society’s 14th Annual Mardi Gras “Paws in the Park” event will stroll through Riverfront Park in Historic Cocoa Village on Sunday, February 16th.
The fun begins at 10:00am with events throughout the day. Pet Contests, Pet Parades, and Pet Adoptions will line the Park to provide some paws-itively fun entertainment for the whole family. This year, celebrity TV dog trainer Joel Silverman will be doing a seminar/demo, as well as a book signing! Don’t forget about the Food Trucks, Lure Course, and Live Music from “Nowhere to Rum”! As the French say, “Laissez Les Bons Temps Rouler” (let the good times roll)!
Mardi Gras “Paws in the Park” is open to the public and admission is free. All proceeds raised from this event will directly benefit the homeless animals of the Brevard Humane Society.
