Volunteer Appreciation Week: Thank You for Being the Heart of Our Mission
As Volunteer Appreciation Week comes to a close, the Brevard Humane Society would like to take a moment to reflect—and say thank you.
This week, we had the privilege of highlighting just a small snapshot of the incredible people who make our mission possible. From behind‑the‑scenes support to hands‑on animal care, from foster homes to community events, our volunteers show up every day with compassion, commitment, and heart.
Their impact reaches far beyond what can be captured in a single post or spotlight.
Celebrating a Legacy of Service

We began the week by honoring Rita, a volunteer whose dedication represents the very best of Brevard Humane Society.
Since joining us in 2014, Rita has quietly and consistently supported our organization in meaningful ways. Since we began tracking hours in 2018, she has surpassed an extraordinary milestone—more than 5,000 lifetime volunteer hours.
Whether she is keeping our laundry organized and ready for animals and staff, finding ways to brighten the team’s day, or ensuring unused items continue to serve the community through the Sharing Center, Rita’s kindness is steady, humble, and deeply felt. She does not seek recognition—but she truly embodies the heart of our mission.
The Many Ways Volunteers Make a Difference
Throughout the week, we also recognized the volunteers who support our work across every area of the organization.

Inside our shelter, volunteers provide daily care that helps animals thrive while they wait for their forever homes. From dog walking and enrichment to kennel cleaning, grooming, and socialization, these volunteers ensure our pets are safe, comfortable, and cared for with compassion.
Our event volunteers help bring our mission into the community—setting up, staying late, assisting guests, managing registration, and helping adoptable animals shine. Every successful fundraiser or outreach event is made possible by their dedication.

And our foster volunteers open their homes and hearts to the most vulnerable animals, providing bottle feeding, socialization, medical support, and round‑the‑clock care. Because of them, countless puppies and kittens receive the safe start they need to grow, heal, and find loving homes.
A Community Effort with Lasting Impact
Last year alone, volunteers contributed more than 38,000 hours to Brevard Humane Society. Each hour represents a moment of care, patience, and compassion—and together, those moments change lives.
To every volunteer who gives their time, energy, and heart to this mission: thank you. Your generosity strengthens our organization, uplifts our staff, and most importantly, gives animals the second chances they deserve.
