Internships
The Brevard Humane Society offers a variety of internship opportunities for those interested in gaining hands-on experience with animal care and looking to learning from our dedicated caregivers.
Unpaid internships are open to college students, undergraduate and graduate students, as are other candidates who have equivalent life and work experience with animals and those looking to make a career change. Intern programs are open to people 20 years of age and over.

Volunteer Coordinator
The Brevard Humane Society (BHS) is seeking a full-time opportunity for an experienced Volunteer Coordinator/Trainer. The Volunteer Coordinator is responsible for facilitating the smooth running of daily operations and the success of community outreach efforts, developing, and coordinating all aspects of the Volunteer and Foster Recruitment Programs, which includes, but is not limited to, recruitment, training, and retention, maintaining records and schedules, and serving as liaison with the community to attract volunteers and also work closely with the BHS Executive Director (ED). Will be expected to support event activities in the community. Must have strong compassion for animals. Must have two years of experience as a volunteer coordinator/trainer along with following office procedures, be detail-oriented, a self-starter who is proficient with computers and various volunteer tracking software programs (Bookings, Volgistics, Advantage+, PetPoint, Microsoft software) and be comfortable communicating with all levels of staff and volunteers on a daily basis. Some of your responsibilities will include:
- Train volunteers on foster care of animals and procedures, dog walking and handling, as well as transportation of inventory to and from events as needed.
- Communicate with volunteers on upcoming events.
- Communicate with fosters on a weekly basis about our animals in their care, as well as schedule appointments using calendar and appointment software.
- Lead group orientations and tours and assist with volunteer orientation and training classes.
- To be successful in this role you will need:
- Excellent time management skills, have an analytical mind, be well-organized, and have the ability to jump from one project to another as needed.
- Must possess confidence in giving presentations and communicating with individuals as well as groups and be comfortable correcting and holding individuals to standards.
- Good administrative and IT skills (including Microsoft Outlook, Word & Excel, Constant Contact, Volgistics, Advantage) are required.
- Able to carry/lift 40 lbs. and stand for extended periods, indoors and out which, on occasion, may expose you to high/low temperatures and adverse climate.
- Desire to learn how to care for neonatal kittens.
- A valid license and a clean driving record.
- Able to work weekends and holidays as needed. Normal schedule will be Tuesday to Saturday, 8 am to 5pm.
- $16-20 an hour, dependent upon experience.

Pick-Up/Delivery Driver
The Brevard Humane Society is looking for a part-time Pick-Up/Delivery Driver at our 1020 Cox Road location..
Responsibilities: Provide pick-up and delivery of animals, furniture, donations, misc. errands as needed.
Requirements:
- Good/clean driving record
- Able to drive a lift truck, box/bread truck, and cargo van.
- Experience moving furniture.
- Ability to count money.
- Able to lift 70 lbs.

Kennel Manager
GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Brevard Humane Society is looking for someone to oversee the quality and care of animals in the Kennel and provide general oversight of Kennel procedures with staff.
SPECIFIC DUTIES:
- To provide services needed to ensure a healthy, safe environment for animals housed in the Adoption Center.
- Skillful in the handling of animals and ensuring humane and compassionate care is given to same.
- Provide direction and leadership to Kennel staff and assess the same with performance reviews.
- Provide training to staff and volunteers as required, ensuring policies and procedures are being followed.
- Review animal inventory daily, contacting rescues for unadoptable animals; noting animal medical needs to the Adoption Center Vet Assistant for expedient placement.
- Choose animals for weekly and monthly community highlights on local radio stations and in monthly magazines.
- Approve animals for incoming transports and participate in pick-ups as needed.
- Deliver adoptable animals to events and/or the Merritt Island location as needed.
- Ensure availability of adoptable animals is completed in a timely manner.
- Perform humane euthanasia to animals as required (certification required).
- Oversee all aspects of animal intake, including temperature, vaccination(s), flea/heartworm prevention, weight, deworming, and temperament testing (before scheduling spay/neuter services).
- Inventory and maintain required supplies and order the same as needed.
- Oversee maintenance of the Kennel area and report repairs as needed.
- Ensure the Adoption Center Vet Assistant maintains a daily list of animals requiring Veterinary services (medical issues and spay/neuter) and perform daily walk-throughs with the Veterinarian for same.
- Perform daily walk-through of the Kennel area before opening to the public.
- Perform daily walk-around of the property before closing each day to ensure all equipment has been secured and all buildings/sheds have been locked.
- Oversee the grooming of animals, which includes nail trim and bathing. Report any ear mites, wounds, infections, etc. found to the Adoption Center Vet Care Coordinator.
- Ensure all animals are weighed and nails trimmed weekly, check for health issues/weight loss.
- Assign staff, volunteers, and community service workers duties and make sure they are staying on task.
- Update staff schedule on a monthly basis.
- Perform any other duties as assigned or specified by Cocoa Campus Manager.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
Education:
High School Diploma or GED
Experience:
- Required: Minimum of one to two years in a shelter setting is required.
- Required: Management or supervisory experience.
- Required-Certified in performing Euthanasia or become Euthanasia Certified within 90 days of hire.
Skills:
- Must be energetic, self-initiating, and able to follow directions.
- Skillful in the handling of animals.
- Able to get along with others and handle a fast-paced work environment, along with employee and customer emotional extremes.
- Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
Dress Code:
Hospital scrub top or BHS T-shirt, nametag. Jeans or scrub pants (no torn, ripped or stained jeans or t-shirts). Closed-toed non-skid rubber-bottom shoes.
