Internships

The Brevard Humane Society offers a variety of internship opportunities for those interested in gaining hands-on experience with animal care and looking to learning from our dedicated caregivers.

Unpaid internships are open to college students, undergraduate and graduate students, as are other candidates who have equivalent life and work experience with animals and those looking to make a career change. Intern programs are open to people 20 years of age and over.

GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

Pet Pals oversee the quality and care of animals at the Merritt Island Campus. Provide quality service, compassion, and animal information to customers both in person and over the phone. Ensure and maintain the standard that the animals’ stay will be as happy and comfortable as possible. Ensure the MIAC building, grounds and interior are kept up to the standards maintained outlined in BHS Policies and Procedures.

SPECIFIC DUTIES:

  • To provide a clean, healthy, and safe environment, provide food and water, dog walking, scooping litter, minor grooming, and administering medication, for our guests during their stay.
  • Maintain cleanliness of the facility; including suites, play areas (indoor and outdoor), lobby, grooming room, bathroom, food prep area, and retail areas.
  • Keep suites clean throughout the day and make sure the guests are happy and healthy.
  • Daily washing of dishes; blankets, toys, etc.
  • Provide information to customers on operations.
  • Assist in behavioral assessments with clients and guests.
  • Ensure sure all floor areas are kept dry, and free of hoses and other cleaning tools throughout the facility.
  • Empty all waste containers and mop buckets and put them in the proper area.
  • Check in all guests and ensure proper placement.
  • Keep outside play areas neat and clean, free of litter, and make sure all feces is cleaned from the yard.
  • Answer radio and assist staff with clients and guests coming into and departing the facility.
  • Be aware of any issues such as behavioral , injury or sickness, or any other problems that arise and report the same.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned or specified by the Manager.

POSTION REQUIREMENTS:

Experience:

  • Customer Service
  • Prior work in a shelter or boarding facility preferred
  • Prior animal handling preferred

 

Skills:

  • Must be able to follow directions.
  • Time management is essential.
  • Able to work in a fast-paced, team environment.
  • Must be detail-oriented, problem-solving individual who can easily follow written directions and who can express themselves in a clear and concise manner both verbally and in writing.
  • Must maintain emotional control during stressful situations, last-minute schedule changes, changes in care instructions, extreme weather, emergencies, etc.
  • Frequent standing, brisk walking, lifting of heavy guests, and potentially dealing with guests that jump up and have poor manners.

GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Thrift Shop Manager is responsible for all aspects of running a Thrift Shop as a business, including maintaining customer service standards, revenue growth, employee/volunteer training and development, operations, striving to meet and exceed goals and adhere to a budget. As the manager, you take an active role in making the Thrift Shop strive, promote awareness and the mission of the Humane Society to the community.
 
SPECIFIC DUTIES:
  • Oversee finances (using basic accounting principles) and budgeting for Thrift shop
  • Oversee daily operations of:
    • Donations
    • Sorting/pricing of donations
    • Volunteers and community service workers
    • Ensure the facility is clean and kept presentable
    • Ensure the outside of the facility and parking areas are clean and free of hazards
    • Creating attractive displays and effectively merchandise goods for sale
    • Locating placement/arrangement of merchandise
    • Coordinating the maintenance of the landscape if required
    • Cash flow of daily sales
    • Loss prevention
  • Oversee all aspects of staffing including hiring, firing, performance reviews, and training.
  • Provide input regarding outside opportunities for the Organization
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
  •  Education:
    • High School or GED (College desirable)
  •  Experience: 
    • Previous thrift shop experience desired but retail experience is a must
    • Previous management in a retail environment.
    • Hiring, disciplining, termination, reviews, coaching and training
    • Accounting principles and money handling
    • A minimum of one year of customer service
    • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
    • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
    • Ability to multi-task and detail oriented
    • Ability to work independently and oversee others
    • Demonstrate strong teamwork skills and work well in a team
    • Bilingual candidates (Spanish/English) are highly desirable
    • Non-profit experience is a plus

    GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Assists with the day-to-day operations of Molly Mutt Thrift Shops.

    SPECIFIC DUTIES:

    • Sell merchandise.
    • Keep the sales floor and surrounding areas clean.
    • Maintains a professional and cordial working attitude with staff, volunteers, and customers.
    • Answer phones.
    • Perform the opening and/or closing of store along with completing associated paperwork.
    • Sort, price, and display donations; keep donation area neat and tidy.
    • Signing in and out of volunteers and community service volunteers.
    • Provide accurate information and friendly customer service to the public.
    • Immediately notify the manager of any problems or potential problems within the shop.
    • Ensure the outside of the store is clean and free of debris.
    • Perform all other duties as assigned.

     

    POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

    • Experience:
      • Must have customer service
      • Retail sales desirable
    • Education: High school diploma or GED
    • Skills:
      • Ability to operate a cash register, computer, and use Microsoft software.
      • Must be highly organized and energetic.

      • Able to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
      • Able to get along well with others and possess a positive attitude.
      • Must have excellent attendance and be at work on time.
      • Must be able to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.

    GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Performs skilled professional work developing and coordinating the Brevard Humane Society (BHS) volunteer program, which includes recruiting and placing volunteers, volunteer retention, maintaining volunteer records and schedules, preparing reports, and serving as the liaison with the community to attract volunteers in the various volunteer categories.

    SPECIFIC DUTIES:

    • Develops and maintains the policies and procedures that govern the volunteer program.
    • Develops, organizes and conducts the orientation and training of volunteers.
    • Updates training materials and programs as needed and alerts volunteers to relevant education opportunities.
    • Develops and implements strategies to recruit volunteers.
    • Responds to inquiries regarding the volunteer program.
    • Interviews and screens potential volunteers.
    • Attends all specialized volunteer training courses to determine volunteer interests and abilities and to develop relationships with volunteers.
    • Matches volunteers to appropriate jobs, seeking to fulfill the needs of CBHS as well as the individual.
    • Maintains volunteer personnel records noting special skills and interests.
    • Records hours donated and notes incidents and injuries.
    • Prepares operational reports on volunteer activities and maintains the volunteer records from events.
    • Maintains communication with volunteers and requests volunteer services via email, phone calls and social media outlets.
    • Maintains the (BHS) Volunteer Facebook page.
    • Regularly surveys staff to reassess needs for volunteer assistance and updates job assignments as needed.
    • Develops and conducts recognition programs to honor volunteers.
    • Assists volunteers and staff in resolving conflicts.
    • Supports volunteer functions with the Event Coordinator by recruiting volunteers and attending events as needed.
    • Confers with other Volunteer Coordinators in other jurisdictions to keep current with innovative techniques to enhance the program.
    • Maintains and tracks organizations foster and heartworm treatment program.
    • Adheres to all confidential information protection.
    • Performs other related tasks and supports the Organization as needed.

    POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

    • Experience:
      • Two years experience in office procedures and volunteer coordination are preferred.
      • Knowledge of Signup Genius, Volgistics, and Constant Contact.
    • Education:
      • Two-year degree in business or related field, or equivalent work experience
    • Required Skills:
      • Management principles, practices and procedures.
      • Ability to mediate disputes and resolve problems.
      • Ability to develop training materials, organize and conduct training sessions.
      • Ability to exercise sound judgment in making decisions.

    GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

    The Wellness Veterinarian is responsible for all aspects of veterinary medicine for animals received at the BHS Spay/Neuter and Wellness Clinic as well as the shelter animals. The Wellness Veterinarian is bound by the rules, regulations, and guidelines in the Employee’s Manual. Handling of all animals will be done in a kind, compassionate, and gentle manner. The Wellness Veterinarian is responsible for supervision of all medical operations of the Cocoa Campus.

     

    SPECIFIC DUTIES:

    –  Responsible for recommending healthy and socially acceptable animals for adoption to the general public. To the best of his/her ability, will protect the Adoption Center from potential liability of recommending unhealthy or socially unacceptable animals for adoption.

    –  Responsible for, but may delegate, the ordering of all medical supplies needed for wellness.

    –  Responsible for, but may delegate, the medical record keeping generated for client’s animals.

    –  Responsible for administering rabies vaccines to those animals four (4) months of age or older.

    –  Diagnose potential medical problems of clients’ animals as well as Adoption Center animals.

    –  Responsible for, but may delegate, micro-chipping animals adopted from the Adoption Center.

    –  Assure compliance with all federal, state, county, and city laws and ordinances.

     

    POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

    Education:   

    –  Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine degree from an accredited U.S. university and have a DEA permit.

    Experience:

    –  Must possess a valid State of Florida license to practice veterinary medicine, and at least 2 years experience is desirable, in a veterinary clinic or animal shelter.

    Skills:

    –  Must be personable, able to communicate with and direct staff, and work as member of a team. 

    –  Must be able to lift 50 lbs.

    –  Ability to take a teamwork approach to the job by cooperating with others, offering help to others when needed, and considering larger organization or team goals rather than individual concerns.

    –  Ability to adapt to and remain calm in a constantly changing and sometimes stressful work environment.

    –  Willing to share new ideas and insights.
