Internships

The Brevard Humane Society offers a variety of internship opportunities for those interested in gaining hands-on experience with animal care and looking to learning from our dedicated caregivers.

Unpaid internships are open to college students, undergraduate and graduate students, as are other candidates who have equivalent life and work experience with animals and those looking to make a career change. Intern programs are open to people 20 years of age and over.

POSITION: Certified Veterinary Technician          DEPARTMENT: Spay/Neuter Clinic

 

REPORT TO: Clinic Practice Manager                 SALARY RANGE: 

 

GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

 To assist the veterinarian(s) with the spay/neuter surgeries, and treatment of all animals brought to the CBHS Spay/Neuter and Wellness Clinic. To handle all animals in a kind, compassionate, and gentle manner. To oversee the Veterinary Assistants and/or CVT’s for the facility and controlled substance.

 

SPECIFIC DUTIES:

  • Customer Service: ability to answer questions pertaining to flea/tick/heartworm products, vaccines, basic policies and procedures, ability to maintain a relaxed pleasant tone and always treat the customer with respect, and patience
  • Technical Skills: draw up vaccines, fill prescriptions, run fecal tests, run various blood tests, phlebotomy, stain slides for cytology, and other tasks
  • Surgical Skills: restraint, IV injection, ability to draw up precise amounts of medication, knowledge of the drugs used,  knowledge of the surgical procedure
  • Controlled Substance: Record all substance required by state veterinary laws and DEA, precisely and accurately with securing these substances at all times
  • Clerical Skills: ability to neatly, concisely, and in proper medical terms make notations on records, ability to write up prescription labels, ability to use computers with proficiency
  • All other duties as assigned

 

ADDITIONAL DUTIES THAT MAY BE REQUIRED OF CVT:

  • Assist in the appropriateness of surgical candidates
  • Assemble paperwork including rabies certificates
  • Must possess basic mathematical skills with use of a calculator including but not limited to addition, subtraction, multiplication and division
  • Calculate dog and cat anesthetics and medication
  • Pre-medicating animals
  • Prepare animals for pre-surgical workup and pre-medication
  • Keep animals on table at all times
  • Report all health concerns to the Veterinarian
  • Properly perform intubations or restrain animals for induction and intubation
  • Prepare animals for surgery by shaving, vacuuming, expressing bladder/palpation, scrubbing surgical area
  • Set up animals for surgery including hooking endotracheal tube to anesthesia machine, setting appropriate sized bag
  • Transport animals into surgery
  • Remove patients from surgery table
  • Assist Assistants in monitoring recovering animals
  • Transport patient back to appropriate kennel after recovery
  • Monitor recovery of animals in post-op rooms
  • Communicate both in written and oral for administration of post operative pain medication or antibiotics
  • Maintain medical records
  • Maintain surgery log
  • Maintain drug log
  • Sort incoming inventory
  • Maintain stock within the OR
  • Maintain exam rooms and restock
  • Clean instruments
  • Assemble and sterilize surgical packs
  • Clean endotracheal tubes and sort by size
  • Clean and disinfect any muzzles used
  • Clean and disinfect kennels and transport carriers
  • Sweep and mop appropriate areas and empty garbage
  • Communicate additional charges with office receptionist
  • Communicate post-op instructions to owners at pick up
  • Maintain stock of medication and inventory
  • Supply wish list order for medication, supplies and all other essential items
  • Oversee Assistants for recovery of surgery animals
  • All other duties as assigned

 

IDEAL POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

 

Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalency
  • Certified Veterinary Technician degree & certification

 

Experience: 

  • We prefer skilled employees, with a minimum of two years animal handling experience with dogs and cats in a professional setting. Additional experience running blood tests, monitoring surgical patients, and performing subcutaneous injections is also preferred. 

 

 Skills: 

  • Working knowledge of laboratory procedures such as: the use and care of a microscope, running snap tests, running fecal tests, etc.
  • Working knowledge of surgery skills: restraint, anesthesia, monitoring and recovery.
  • Communications skills with co-workers, public and other veterinary professionals. Must be personable and able to work with others, accept direction, and work as a member of a team.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to bend and kneel repeatedly

CLINIC MANAGER
 
GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
To manage the programs, services and goals of the spay/neuter and wellness clinic, and act as liaison for the animal’s care between the Shelter and Clinic.
SPECIFIC DUTIES:
1.      Responsible for staffing needs of the Clinic  (excluding veterinarian).
2.      Fill in at front desk (check-in and out patients and clients) as needed.
3.      Fill in with prepping for surgery (pre and post op care) as needed.
4.   Inventory control of all products and supplies for the Clinic.
5.      Coordinate with vendors/suppliers for product/supplies.
6.      Oversee surgery and wellness schedules.
7.    Ensure client satisfaction (as needed).
8.      Maintain accounting information (daily, weekly and monthly).
9.   Provide monthly measurable statistics (including surgical and wellness reports).
10. Oversee medical records and documentation.
11. Advise management of opportunities with promotions and advertising initiatives.
12. Ensure reminder cards for clients are sent in a timely manner.
13. Maintain current fee schedule and advise adjustments as needed.
14. Review and adhere to clinic budget.
15. Ensure personnel follow BHS policies and procedures (all employees must review and sign off on same).
16. Ensure the cleanliness of the facility is kept up to standards.
17. Review Clinic policy and protocol and submit recommendations.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
Education: AA or AS degree in Business with CVT certification most desirable. Must have prior experience operating in an animal clinic/shelter environment (exposure to shelter medicine a plus).
Skills: working knowledge in basic accounting, communication, computer, employee management and basic operations of an animal clinic.
Must be able to multi-task and handle a fast-paced work environment.
Must be motivated, organized and have strong interpersonal, team-building skills.
Must have good phone etiquette.
Uniform:
Blouse/shirt or scrub top, slacks, jeans, or scrub pants; no rips or tears.
Rubber-soled, close-toed shoes; no clogs.

 DRIVER
 
GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provide pick-up and delivery of animals, DOA, furniture, donations, misc errands as needed.
 
SPECIFIC DUTIES:
·         Responsible for submitting a daily driver’s log, Vehicle Safety checklist and the cleaning of vehicles.
·         Ability to work alone or as a team member.
·         Follow all Safety rules and report any accident and unsafe conditions (Vehicle or Personal) immediately to Supervisor.
·         Responsible for delivery of bank deposits (night drop) and delivery of pay checks to the Thrift stores and Merritt Island Adoption center.
·         Pick up money from other agencies for the shelter.
·         Responsible for the pick-up and delivery of animals, furniture, supplies and other items (listed on the
·         Driver Log Sheet) to be picked up and delivered to Molly Mutt Thrift stores, and other locations as instructed.
·         Responsible for the pick-up and delivery of DOA and Cremations as needed.
·         Support special events when needed.
·         Delivery and pick-up of newspapers and aluminum can and deliver to recycling plant.
·         Perform all other assignments or duties as assigned.
 POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
 Education:
–   High School or GED
 Experience: 
– Able to drive a truck or van.
– Experience moving furniture, helpful but not required. 
 Skills:
 – Valid Driver’s License in good standing.
 – Ability to count money.
 – Able to lift 70 lbs.

POSITION: Merritt Island Management Team Member

GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
Act as Management Team Leader and maintain the quality and efficiency of the Brevard Humane Society (BHS) Merritt Island Campus. Oversee staff and volunteers maintain an efficient work environment. Provide quality service, compassion, and animal information to customers both in person and over the phone.  Provide and oversee humane care and treatment for the adoptable and owned animals.  Assure and maintain the standard that the animals’ stay will be as happy and comfortable as possible. Ensure the building, exterior and interior grounds are kept up to the standards set by BHS.
 SPECIFIC DUTIES:
-Maintain and provide accurate information and friendly direction to staff, and professional customer service to the public in a responsive, positive, courteous and truthful manner, especially during times of conflict.
-Be a focal point for Pet Point and Paw Partner programs.
-Maintain daily cash reports, deposits (trouble shoot shortage/overage), and animal records. Provide requested daily and monthly information, documents, and statistics to senior management.
-Provide guidance to staff, volunteers, and potential adopters when requested, to ensure successful and appropriate placement of adoptable animals.
-Act as manager on duty.
-Responsible for the care, cleaning and general health of animals by visually inspecting them, documenting issues, and notifying the Vet Care Coordinator located at the Cocoa Campus as needed.
-Regularly participate in staff meetings and assist by making suggestions designed to improve working conditions or procedures.
-Create weekly schedules and oversee staff attendance.
-Direct volunteers and/or community service workers as needed.
-Immediately notify senior management of any issues.
-Process donations and supplies and send them to designated area.
-Responsible for overseeing and keeping retail area clean and all items priced.
-Perform all other duties as assigned.
 
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
Technical Experience: Two years in the animal field. Prior animal boarding a plus. Must have prior staff management experience. Skilled with basic office equipment such as computers, phones, copiers, e-fax, and software programs.
Education: High School diploma or GED.    
Skills:
 –Ability to efficiently operate a computer and accompanying software.
-Must be highly organized, friendly, energetic and a quick learner.
-Able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
-Able to get along well with others and project positive attitude.
-Must be able to lift 30 lbs.

GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assists with the day-to-day operations of Molly Mutt Thrift Stores.
SPECIFIC DUTIES:
  1. Sell merchandise.
  2. Keep the sales floor and surrounding areas clean and all items priced.
  3. Maintains a professional and cordial working attitude.
  4. Answer phones.
  5. Provide excellent customer service.
  6. Work well with fellow employees, community service workers, and volunteers.
  7. Perform the opening and/or closing of store along with completing associated paperwork.
  8. Sort, price, and display donations; keep donation area neat and tidy.
  9. Signing in and out of volunteers and community service volunteers.
  10. Must have excellent attendance and be at work on time. 
  11. Provide accurate information and friendly customer service to the public. Ensure all customers are treated with respect, empathy, and understanding even in times of conflict.
  12. Immediately notify the manager of any problems or potential problems within the store.
  13. Must be able to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
  14. Ensure the outside of the store is clean and free of debris.
  15. Perform any of the job duties as requested by management.
 
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Skills:

GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

The Thrift Shop Manager is responsible for all aspects of running a Thrift Shop as a business, including maintaining customer service standards, revenue growth, employee/volunteer training and development, operations, striving to meet and exceed goals and adhere to a budget. As the manager, you take an active role in making the Thrift Shop strive, promote awareness and the mission of the Humane Society to the community.

 

 

SPECIFIC DUTIES:

– Oversee finances (using basic accounting principles) and budgeting for Thrift shop
– Oversee daily operations of:

–  Donations

–  Sorting/pricing of donations 

–  Volunteers and community service workers

–  Ensure the facility is clean and kept presentable

      –  Ensure the outside of the facility and parking areas are clean and free of hazards

–  Creating attractive displays and effectively merchandise goods for sale

–  Locating placement/arrangement of merchandise

      –  Coordinating the maintenance of the landscape if required

–  Oversee the loading and unloading of merchandise from vehicles as needed

–  Oversee the cash flow of daily sales

–  Oversee loss prevention

– Oversee all aspects of staffing

– Provide input regarding outside opportunities for the Organization

 

 

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

 

Education: 

 –  High School or GED (College desirable)

 

 

Experience:

    Previous thrift shop experience desired but retail experience is a must
– Previous management in a retail environment.

    Human Resource experience including hiring, disciplining, termination, reviews, coaching and training
– Accounting principles and money handling

– A minimum of one year of customer service
– Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
– Strong communication and interpersonal skills
– Ability to multi-task and detail oriented
– Ability to work independently and oversee others

– Demonstrate strong teamwork skills and work well in a team

– Bilingual candidates (Spanish/English) are highly desirable
– Non-profit experience is a plus
