Internships

The Brevard Humane Society offers a variety of internship opportunities for those interested in gaining hands-on experience with animal care and looking to learning from our dedicated caregivers.

Unpaid internships are open to college students, undergraduate and graduate students, as are other candidates who have equivalent life and work experience with animals and those looking to make a career change. Intern programs are open to people 20 years of age and over.

If you wish to be considered for an internship, please submit an application, a cover letter, résumé, two letters of recommendation from professors and/or employers and a transcript (unofficial transcripts are accepted).

GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provide quality service, compassion, and animal information to all BHS customers both in person and over the phone.  Provide humane care and treatment for the animals in care of BHS.  Assure and maintain the standard that the animals’ stay will be as happy and comfortable as possible.

SPECIFIC DUTIES:

  • Responsible for the feeding, cleaning and disinfecting of assigned animals that are in your assigned areas.
  • Visually inspects animals for any health issues, documents any problems, and notifies the Vet Care Coordinator.
  • Maintains a professional and cordial demeanor.
  • Works well with fellow employees, customers, community service workers, and volunteers.
  • Provides accurate information and friendly service to the public.
  • Acts as a leader for training new staff, any volunteers and/or community service workers assigned to the area.
  • Immediately notifies appropriate manager of any problems or potential issues.
  • Check and return all phone messages.
  • Run morning reports.
  • Answer phones
  • Assist customers with adoptions, animal intakes, return to owners, euthanasia requests, and cremations.
  • Process retail sales and monetary donations.
  • Clear office of donations and supplies donated
  • Sign in and out customers, volunteers, and community service workers

GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

Pet Pals oversee the quality and care of animals at the Merritt Island Campus. Provide quality service, compassion, and animal information to customers both in person and over the phone. Ensure and maintain the standard that the animals’ stay will be as happy and comfortable as possible. Ensure the MIAC building, grounds and interior are kept up to the standards maintained outlined in BHS Policies and Procedures.

SPECIFIC DUTIES:

  • To provide a clean, healthy, and safe environment, provide food and water, dog walking, scooping litter, minor grooming, and administering medication, for our guests during their stay.
  • Maintain cleanliness of the facility; including suites, play areas (indoor and outdoor), lobby, grooming room, bathroom, food prep area, and retail areas.
  • Keep suites clean throughout the day and make sure the guests are happy and healthy.
  • Daily washing of dishes; blankets, toys, etc.
  • Provide information to customers on operations.
  • Assist in behavioral assessments with clients and guests.
  • Ensure sure all floor areas are kept dry, and free of hoses and other cleaning tools throughout the facility.
  • Empty all waste containers and mop buckets and put them in the proper area.
  • Check in all guests and ensure proper placement.
  • Keep outside play areas neat and clean, free of litter, and make sure all feces is cleaned from the yard.
  • Answer radio and assist staff with clients and guests coming into and departing the facility.
  • Be aware of any issues such as behavioral , injury or sickness, or any other problems that arise and report the same.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned or specified by the Manager.

 

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Experience:

  • Prior work in a shelter or boarding facility preferred
  • Prior animal handling preferred

 

Skills:

  • Must be able to follow directions.
  • Time management is essential.
  • Able to work in a fast-paced, team environment.
  • Must be detail-oriented, problem-solving individual who can easily follow written directions and who can express themselves in a clear and concise manner both verbally and in writing.
  • Must maintain emotional control during stressful situations, last-minute schedule changes, changes in care instructions, extreme weather, emergencies, etc.
  • Frequent standing, brisk walking, lifting of heavy guests, and potentially dealing with guests that jump up and have poor manners.

GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

To oversee the quality and care of animals in the Merritt Island Campus Adoption Center and Brevard Bed & Biscuit and provide training to staff and oversee general maintenance of the building and grounds.

SPECIFIC DUTIES:

  • Maintain and enforce all policies and procedures to provide services needed to ensure a healthy, safe environment for animals housed in the Merritt Island Adoption Center and staying at the Brevard Humane Society Bed & Biscuit.
  • Skillful in the handling of animals and ensure humane and compassionate care is given to all animals in care.
  • Provide direction and leadership to staff and assess same with performance reviews as required.
  • Monitor animals for disease and temperament and report all concerns to Executive Director.
  • Inventory and maintain required supplies and order as needed.
  • Oversee maintenance of building and grounds.
  • Perform daily walkthrough of the adoption center side of the building prior to opening to public.
  • Perform daily walkthrough of building/grounds prior to closing each day.
  • Provide direction, and have open communications with employees, management and customers.
  • Responsible for the hiring, firing, and performance reviews of staff.
  • Oversee staff scheduling.
  • Maintain daily cash reports, deposits, animal records and product.
  • Provide training to staff and volunteers to ensure successful and appropriate placement of shelter animals during adoption process.
  • Coordinate minor facility repairs inside and outside of building.
  • Review and adhere to the Merritt Island Campus budget.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Executive Director or Cocoa Campus Manager.

 

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Education: High School Diploma or GED

Experience: 

  • Minimum of one to two years in a shelter setting or other pet related business.
  • Management/supervisory experience


Skills:

  • Computer knowledge required, Pet Point, PetExec, and Microsoft software knowledge preferred.
  • Must be able to give direction to staff, volunteers, and community service.
  • Skillful in the handling of animals and recognizing disease/illness.
  • Team Player.

GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

Oversee the daily operations of the Cocoa Campus, its programs, procedures and resources, and all aspects of employment/employee issues.  Review and assist in operational department guidelines.  Manage operations budget, review departmental expenditures and facility maintenance expenses.

SPECIFIC DUTIES:

  • Review and enforce BHS policy and procedures.
  • Management of Cocoa Campus staff.
  • Oversee off-shift duties for shelter care.
  • Maintain an active safety program as the Organization’s Safety Committee Chair.
  • Management and maintenance of Cocoa Campus facilities and grounds.
  • Review and adhere to Cocoa Campus budget.

 

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Education: High School diploma, college degree preferred.

Experience: At least 5 years previous shelter management or experience in a similar position.

GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

Join our dedicated veterinary team as a Clinic Receptionist/Appointment Setter, where you’ll be the warm, welcoming face that greets our clients—and their furry family members—with kindness, professionalism, and a smile. This is more than just a front desk job – it’s a critical role at the heart of our clinic, ensuring every visit runs smoothly and every client feels cared for. Make a real difference in the lives of pets and the people who love them.

SPECIFIC DUTIES:

As a key member of our front office team, your daily responsibilities will include:

  • Greet clients and their pets with warmth and professionalism during check-in and check-out.
  • Schedule appointments accurately and efficiently using our web-based software.
  • Handle multi-line phone systems – answer calls, take messages, and return voicemails.
  • Maintain digital and physical medical records by entering and organizing patient information.
  • Process payments, issue receipts, and balance daily financial transactions.
  • Keep reception and common areas tidy and welcoming for both clients and staff.
  • Track inventory, assisting with product counts during opening and closing shifts.
  • Support the veterinary team with additional administrative tasks as assigned.
  • All other job duties as assigned.

GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Wellness Veterinarian is responsible for all aspects of veterinary medicine for animals received at the BHS Spay/Neuter and Wellness Clinic as well as the shelter animals. The Wellness Veterinarian is bound by the rules, regulations, and guidelines in the Employee’s Manual. Handling of all animals will be done in a kind, compassionate, and gentle manner. The Wellness Veterinarian is responsible for supervision of all medical operations of the Cocoa Campus.

SPECIFIC DUTIES:

–  Responsible for recommending healthy and socially acceptable animals for adoption to the general public. To the best of his/her ability, will protect the Adoption Center from potential liability of recommending unhealthy or socially unacceptable animals for adoption.

–  Responsible for, but may delegate, the ordering of all medical supplies needed for wellness.

–  Responsible for, but may delegate, the medical record keeping generated for client’s animals.

–  Responsible for administering rabies vaccines to those animals four (4) months of age or older.

–  Diagnose potential medical problems of clients’ animals as well as Adoption Center animals.

–  Responsible for, but may delegate, micro-chipping animals adopted from the Adoption Center.

–  Assure compliance with all federal, state, county, and city laws and ordinances.

 

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Education:   

–  Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine degree from an accredited U.S. university and have a DEA permit.

Experience:

–  Must possess a valid State of Florida license to practice veterinary medicine, and at least 2 years experience is desirable, in a veterinary clinic or animal shelter.

Skills:

–  Must be personable, able to communicate with and direct staff, and work as member of a team. 

–  Must be able to lift 50 lbs.

–  Ability to take a teamwork approach to the job by cooperating with others, offering help to others when needed, and considering larger organization or team goals rather than individual concerns.

–  Ability to adapt to and remain calm in a constantly changing and sometimes stressful work environment.

–  Willing to share new ideas and insights.
