Internships

The Brevard Humane Society offers a variety of internship opportunities for those interested in gaining hands-on experience with animal care and looking to learning from our dedicated caregivers.

Unpaid internships are open to college students, undergraduate and graduate students, as are other candidates who have equivalent life and work experience with animals and those looking to make a career change. Intern programs are open to people 20 years of age and over.

Merritt Island Campus Manager

 

GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

To oversee the quality and care of animals in the Merritt Island Campus Adoption Center and Brevard Bed & Biscuit and provide oversight to staff and general maintenance of the building and grounds.

 

SPECIFIC DUTIES:

  • To follow all policies and procedure to provide services needed to ensure a healthy, safe environment for animals housed in the Merritt Island Adoption Center and staying at the Brevard Humane Society Bed & Biscuit.
  • Skillful in the handling of animals and ensure humane and compassionate care is given to all animals in care.
  • Provide direction and leadership to staff and assess same with performance reviews as required.
  • Monitor animals for disease and temperament and report all concerns to Executive Director.
  • Inventory and maintain required supplies and order as needed.
  • Oversee maintenance of building and grounds.
  • Perform daily walkthrough of the adoption center side of the building prior to opening to public.
  • Perform daily walkthrough of building/grounds prior to closing each day. Secure building when leaving.
  • Maintain a pleasant atmosphere, provide direction, and have open communications with employees, management and customers.
  • Computer knowledge required, Pet Point, PetExec, and Microsoft software knowledge preferred.
  • Maintain daily cash reports, deposits, animal records and product.
  • Provide consultation to staff, volunteers and potential adopters when requested to ensure successful and appropriate placement of shelter animals during adoption process.
  • Perform minor facility repairs inside and outside of building.
  • Review and adhere to the Merritt Island Campus budget.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Executive Director or Cocoa Campus Manager.

The Brevard Humane Society is seeking a full-time opportunity for an animal care technician, or “Pet Pals”, to oversee the quality and care of animals in the Merritt Island Campus Adoption Center and Brevard Bed & Biscuit. Pay dependent upon experience.

Job Description

To provide a clean, healthy and safe environment, provide food and water, dog walking, scooping cat litter box, minor grooming and administering medication, for our guests during their stay.

Duties:

  • Maintain cleanliness of the facility; including suites, play areas (indoor and outdoor), lobby, grooming room, bathroom and food prep area.
  • Keep suites clean throughout the day and make sure the guests are happy and healthy.
  • Daily washing of dishes; blankets, toys, etc.
  • Help customers with any questions they might have.
  • Assist in behavioral assessments with clients and guests.
  • Check in all guests and determine proper placement based on status.
  • Answer radio and assist office staff with clients and guests coming into and departing the facility.
  • Be aware of any problems such as behavioral problems, injury or sickness, or any other problems that might arise and report same.
  • Make sure all pathways and floors are kept dry, free of hoses and other cleaning tools throughout the facility.
  • Empty all waste containers and mop buckets and put them in proper area.
  • Keep outside play areas neat and clean, free of litter, and make sure all feces is pickup out of the yard.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned or specified by the Manager.
  • Must be able to follow directions.
  • Time management skills are essential.
  • Able to work in a fast-paced, team environment.
  • Must be attentive and pay close attention to guests during their visit and must be able to clearly articulate in a guest journal that will be provided to the client immediately following each visit.
  • Must be detail-oriented, problem-solving individuals who can easily follow written directions and who can express themselves in a clear and concise manner both verbally and in writing.
  • Must maintain emotional control during stressful situations, last-minute schedule changes, changes in care instructions, extreme weather, emergencies, etc.
  • Frequent standing, brisk walking, lifting of heavy guests, and potentially dealing with guests that jump up and have poor manners.
  • Energy, good physical health, strength, fitness, animal sense and stamina are a must.

To provide excellent customer service for our clients and their pets. Maintain the quality and efficiency of the clinic office.

  • Greeting clients and their pets at appointment check in and check out.
  • Use of a computerized record keeping system.
  • Use of multi-line phone system.
  • Appointment scheduling.
  • Entering Medical information.
  • Medical records filing.
  • Maintaining the reception area, waiting area and conference room.
  • Managing financial transactions and daily deposits.
  • Responsible for ordering product and inventory product.
  • Opening and closing of the facility.

Assists with the day-to-day operations of Molly Mutt Thrift Stores.

 

SPECIFIC DUTIES:

  • Sell merchandise.
  • Keep the sales floor and surrounding areas clean and all items priced.

Animal Care Technician

 

GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

To provide a clean, healthy, safe environment for the animals placed in our care

SPECIFIC DUTIES:

  • Maintains the kennel and the animals housed in our facility. Assist in morning duties prior to opening from 8-11am, or until cleaning is complete.
  • Keep kennels and cages clean throughout the day and make sure the animals are happy and healthy.
  • Daily washing of dishes and donated items for shelter use.
  • Daily washing of carriers outside the breeze way.
  • Helping customers with any questions they might have.
  • Conducting interactions with customers and adoption center animals (mandatory for full-time status).
  • Keep food prep room, hallways and rooms where cats are kept cleaned and mopped. Make sure all hallways and floors are kept dry, free of hoses and other cleaning tools throughout the kennel while adoption center is open.
  • Empty all waste containers and mop buckets and put them in proper area.
  • Check all incoming animals and determine proper placement based on status, temperament, and/or health.
  • Keep the grounds neat and clean, free of litter, and make sure all feces is pickup out of the yard.
  • Answer the radio and assist office staff with animals coming into the shelter.
  • Daily disinfect pet carriers and restock in the receiving area.
  • Performs Heartworm tests on dogs (age appropriate). Perform Feline Leukemia and FIV tests on cats/kittens (mandatory for full-time status).
  • Be aware of any problems such as behavioral problems, sicknesses/diseases or any other problems that might arise and report same.
  • Assist in conducting temperament testing on all dogs placed up for adoption.
  • Help perform humane euthanasia on animals selected by trained staff members and be open to attending and passing euthanasia certification course (mandatory for full-time status).
  • Assign volunteers and community service workers duties and make sure they are staying on task.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned or specified by Kennel Manager/Lead.
