FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Spring marks the beginning of “kitten season,” when an estimated 20 million kittens will be born without homes. In anticipation of this influx, the Brevard Humane Society is holding a donation drive, now through April 14th, in conjunction with its first annual “Itty Bitty Kitty” Shower to help raise awareness and necessary supplies.
“While our Foster Care Program is successful in reducing the numbers of unwanted cats that are euthanized each year, we know that there will be a tremendous need in the coming months. In fact, we’re already seeing orphaned kittens,” said Michelle Deaton, Foster Care Coordinator for the Brevard Humane Society. “This puts a HUGE strain on our resources, and without the help and support of our community, we may not have the funding and supplies needed to save them all.”
The Brevard Humane Society has a well-established foster care program that places kittens into temporary homes when they are either too young for adoption or while they are being treated for an illness. The ability to have trained foster care providers and a wealth of provisions is a part of the organization’s proactive life-saving strategy. Last year, the Brevard Humane Society successfully saved the lives of over 500 orphaned kittens and they hope to surpass that number in 2018 with support from the community and their Kitten Shower fundraiser.
Some of the items requested for donation include: KMR powder, nursing bottles and tips, unflavored Pedialyte, Royal Canin wet and dry food, and soft baby blankets; however, a complete list of items is available via their Amazon Wishlist. Donations may be dropped off at the Brevard Humane Society’s Cocoa or Merritt Island Adoption Center, any of the four Molly Mutt Thrift Store locations, the Bath Cottage, Jon’s Jewelry, Murdock’s Southern Bistro, Paisley Vegan Kitchen, Pet Pros in Rockledge or Melbourne, or Mrs. Mango & Company.
Following the donation drive, on Sunday, April 15th, the community is invited to celebrate and attend an “Itty Bitty Kitty” Shower from 1-3PM at the Brevard Humane Society’s Cocoa Adoption Center located at 1020 Cox Road. Guests will enjoy light refreshments, music, games, a raffle, prizes, a bake sale, craft sale and of course, Itty Bitty Kitties!
