FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

While Hurricane Florence unleashed wind, rain, and flash flooding in the Carolinas, with devastating effect, the staff at Brevard Humane Society and SPCA of Brevard sprang into action. A team of two caravans will set out early Thursday to rescue 28 dogs from Manning and Sumter, South Carolina.

“As soon as the risk to Carolina shelters became apparent, we moved into high gear,” said Theresa Clifton, Brevard Humane Society’s Executive Director. We’re proud to be working with SPCA of Brevard and saving lives following Hurricane Florence.”

Unfortunately, hurricanes take a toll on far more than just people and property. Sadly, in the wake of natural disasters the needs of animals are often forgotten. The focus of this trip is to aid with available space so pets that were displaced by the storm have safe refuge. Lost or stray animals will often remain in their local area, hoping against hope that their families will return to bring them home.

“Being in Florida, we know all too well the struggle to rebound after a major storm,” said Angie Friers, Executive Director for SPCA of Brevard. Uniting with the Brevard Humane Society in this lifesaving mission enables us to save two lives instead of one.”

With many Carolina shelters threatened by flooding and others needing to make room for rescued pets, the team expects Friday’s intake may be the first of many. The two response teams will also be bringing much needed supplies to these impacted communities. Fortunately, local support here in Brevard through the adoption of these animals will create additional space for more rescues. All interested in donating to their relief efforts or adopting one of the animals, are encouraged to visit the organizations’ corresponding websites at: www.spcabrevard.com and www.brevardhumanesociety.org.
