THE BREVARD HUMANE SOCIETY LAUNCHES NEW INITIATIVE TO ENABLE HOMELESS PETS TO HAVE A HOME FOR THE “PAWLIDAYS”
The holiday season is often dubbed as “the most wonderful time of the year,” and the Brevard Humane Society’s new initiative aims to make that a reality for many of its resident pets. Through its new “Home for the Holidays” program, the Brevard Humane Society invites interested families to take a homeless dog or cat home over Thanksgiving, Christmas, or New Year’s with no obligation to make the holiday arrangement a permanent one.
“For many of us, pets are a special part of our family,” said Theresa Clifton, Executive Director for the Brevard Humane Society. “But unfortunately not every family can adopt an animal full-time. Our “Home for the Holidays” program will provide an opportunity for families to spend time together along with an affectionate animal.”
While their facilities will have care-takers onsite to feed and walk their animals during the holidays, the Adoption Centers themselves will be closed—meaning that interactions with loving humans will be limited. While the initiative focuses primarily on dogs, due to the increased stress of a shelter environment, cats are also welcome to go home as a part of the program.
Potential foster families must complete a foster application and present a valid photo ID. The Brevard Humane Society will be responsible for the foster’s medical needs while the foster family loves and cares for the foster as if he or she were their very own. Select, eligible pets will be spayed and/or neutered and fully vaccinated prior to being placed in a home.
“Our ‘Home for the Holidays’ foster drive aims to save the lives of lost and abandoned pets” stated Jessica Klein, Foster Rescue Coordinator for the Brevard Humane Society. “The short-term commitment of fostering saves lives by opening kennel spaces and allows the dogs and cats a much needed break from the stresses of shelter life. After fostering, the dogs and cats are healthier and happier — ready to find their ‘forever’ homes. Of course, the ultimate hope is that host families fall in love with the animals and consider adopting them.”
In addition to giving these homeless pets all the head pats and belly scratches they can handle, the “Home for the Holidays” program allows the shelter a chance to test out what sort of environment might be best suited to each pet when it comes time to finding their forever home. In exchange for the free snuggles and kisses, all prospective participants are encouraged to share pictures and details about their experience.
